Ways of achieving any of these qualifications
The Qualifications can be achieved by a mixture of On-job training and assessment Off-job training, or a process called 'Recognition of prior learning' for experienced staff.
On-Job Training
On job training relies on harnessing the industries skills and experience, where they exist - in the workplace rather than a learning institution. It a natural extension of what happens in the workplace any way with supervisors assessing the competence of the staff. The ITO provides materials which give more structure and consistency to that assessment so that added value – A QUALIFICATION - comes out of the process. Many of the subjects covered in on-job training would be difficult to cover in an off-job training course. On job training and assessment is very cost effective with no time away from the work place and no extra travel or accommodation costs. On job training is specific and targeted - unlike many other forms of training.
Off-Job Training
Off-job training can also be undertaken to help achieve LGITO qualifications, as some of the subjects included in our qualifications are available through polytechnics, for example, communication and business administration skills. A few polytechnics and private training providers are also accredited for some of the industry specific unti standards included in our qualifications. Off job training providedis specific to local government industry needs, and ties in withon job training. Much off job training will be done by correspondence to reduce costs. Staff can therefore undertake this training and be awarded the unit standards that will be added to any others received through on-job training and assessment or the recognition of prior learning process.
LGITO's main role in off-job training relates to quality control by accrediting training providers who wish to train in our qualification areas and monitoring their performance to ensure that their training is upto the national standard. |
